Maa Vindhyavasini is one of the incarnations of Goddess Shakti. She is associated with Vindhyachal (Vindhya Mountains) and popularly worshipped in north India.

She is mostly shown with four arms holding conch and discus in two hands and the other two hands in the posture blessing and protection. Sometimes, she is shown with eight arms holding discus, conch, sword, mace, arrow, bow, trident and noose.

Her vahana is a lion which mostly appears standing by her. Sometimes, Goddess Vindhyavasini appears sitting on a lotus.

According to Vamana Purana, she is also called Shashi Mukhi, meaning the one who has moon face.She is believed to be instantly bestowing benediction. You should worship Her on the sixth day in the second half of Jyeshtha Mas (May-June).

Vindyavasini Durga Puja Tithi

Vindyavasini Durga Puja will be observed on 17th June in 2010 according to lunar calendar.

Brief Legend

According to Padma Purana, Lord Indra (the king of gods) worshipped Goddess Durga. When the Devi got pleased with Him and enquired for His desire, He requested Her to set up Her abode in Vindhya Mountains. Hence, she resides there and consequently called Vindhyavasini Devi.

Another legend has it that when Sati died in fire of yangya due to the insult meted out to Lord Shiva by Her father, Yama, during the Ashwamedha Yangya. Lord Shiva got angry and destroyed the yangya, and killed everybody including Yama. He, then, in anger, start travelling across the world carrying the body of Sati. As the time passed by, the body started decaying and falling on the ground. One of the parts of Her body fell in the Vindhya Mountain where the current temple is located.

One of the popular beliefs is that Goddess Durga after killing Mahishasura decided to stay on Vindhya hills. Hence, she is known as Vindhyavasini in this area.

Customs and Traditions

Usual customs and traditions of Navratri puja is followed to perform Vindhyavasini puja.

Pooja Vidhi

Arrange the following items for Vindhyavasini Puja

Picture of Lord Vishnu, Water in a Kalash, Mango Leaves, Coconut, Roli, Moli, Chawal, Paan, Beetle Nut, Cloves, Cardamom, Sindoor, Abhir, Gulal, Dhoop, Deepak, Matchsticks, Flowers (lotus has special association with Vindhyavasin goddess) and Belpatr Leaves, Fruits of Five Types Such as Pomegranate and Sweets Such as Laddoo and Peda, Panchpatra Containing Spoon and Water, Pata, Mat to Sit (Aasan)

Making Panchamrit

Take a little raw cow milk and mix small amount of curd, shakkar, honey, and ghee in it.

Wash the place of pooja with water and gangajal. Place some grains of wheat on a beetle leaf, put on the ground and place water-filled on kalash on it. Insert five joined mango leaves in the kalash and, then, place a coconut on it. Tie moli in the kalash-neck. Light up a Deepak there and keep it lit till the pooja lasts. Light up some dhoop too there.

Place Maa vindhyavasini on a beetle leaf in front of you, concentrate your mind on Maa vindhyavasini and worship her according to the worship of other forms of Durga.

Vindhyavasini Chalisa

Vindhyavasini Chalisa or couplets can be sung as bhajan during the worship of Goddess Durga.
